Award for Best Final Year Project Competition

Cheung Kwok Fung, Chung Chi Keung, Kwan Kam Wing, Liu Man Wai (MECH graduates of 2005), supervised by Prof. Y. Gao, received an award for 1st runner-up in the 2005-2006 Best Final Year Project Competition, jointly organized by HKIE, ASME and IMechE.

The student project title is "Cooler array and testing device for enhancing the performance of coolant in precision machining". In this project, interesting designs were proposed and tested for improvements to a cooling system for grinding for industries of precision machining, with the aim of cooling the coolant to lower temperatures within a short period of time; as well as optimizing cost and size of the system. Incorporating applications of thermodynamics, heat transfer, air conditioning, control, and imaging for fluid studies, the project demonstrated a practical and good use of existing cooling devices, recycling, and reuse of old air conditioning units, tailor made to the environment in study.
