出淤泥而不染
太阳能是一种技术发展成熟的可再生能源，然而由于首期投资及维修成本不菲，日常生活中的应用不算广泛，Sundial Technology最新研发产品，或有助太阳能应用普及化。
由科大四名学生组成，电子及计算器工程学系范智勇教授出任顾问的Sundial Technology，成功研发具有防反射及自洁功能的太阳能板薄膜，其原理就如荷叶效应（lotus effect），当有水珠在薄膜表面凝结，水珠会『弹走』尘埃，达到自我洁净。该队伍表示，每年单是中国内地用于清洗太阳能板的费用估计高达156亿港元，能源消耗达900亿千瓦小时。若利用他们研发的纳米薄膜，将可大大减省有关支出及能源消耗。
团队成员之一，电子工程及计算器学系博士二年级生徐光海称，面对地球暖化等环境问题，人类对能源的需求有增无减，团队主力研究太阳能相关技术，是希望改善太阳能发电表现，使更多人采用再生能源，他们研发的纳米薄膜，则能大大减低使用太阳能的成本。
产品无论在环保效益及商机皆有很大潜力，因此团队亦致力寻找生产及推出市场的机会，知识转移往往成为科研能否持续的关键。「我们面对最大的挑战，是如何将实验室规模的科研变成商业产品。」团队经历多番尝试，终于凭借其研发，以完整的商业企划，勇夺科大100万元创业计划大赛冠军。
获奖为团队打了一支强心针，他们亦将与内地著名太阳能板制造商合作测试，期望不久将来可作自动化生产，惠及社会。总括创业经验，徐光海认为，在科创路上，除了好的团队及远景，科研支持是不可或缺的，「我们十分感谢科大能源研究院在研究量产方面给予我们很大支持。」
