出淤泥而不染
太陽能是一種技術發展成熟的可再生能源，然而由於首期投資及維修成本不菲，日常生活中的應用不算廣泛，Sundial Technology最新研發產品，或有助太陽能應用普及化。
由科大四名學生組成，電子及計算器工程學系范智勇教授出任顧問的Sundial Technology，成功研發具有防反射及自潔功能的太陽能板薄膜，其原理就如荷葉效應（lotus effect），當有水珠在薄膜表面凝結，水珠會『彈走』塵埃，達到自我潔淨。該隊伍表示，每年單是中國內地用於清洗太陽能板的費用估計高達156億港元，能源消耗達900億千瓦小時。若利用他們研發的納米薄膜，將可大大減省有關支出及能源消耗。
團隊成員之一，電子工程及計算器學系博士二年級生徐光海稱，面對地球暖化等環境問題，人類對能源的需求有增無減，團隊主力研究太陽能相關技術，是希望改善太陽能發電表現，使更多人採用再生能源，他們研發的納米薄膜，則能大大減低使用太陽能的成本。
產品無論在環保效益及商機皆有很大潛力，因此團隊亦致力尋找生產及推出市場的機會，知識轉移往往成為科研能否持續的關鍵。「我們面對最大的挑戰，是如何將實驗室規模的科研變成商業產品。」團隊經歷多番嘗試，終於憑藉其研發，以完整的商業企劃，勇奪科大100萬元創業計畫大賽冠軍。
獲獎為團隊打了一支強心針，他們亦將與內地著名太陽能板製造商合作測試，期望不久將來可作自動化生產，惠及社會。總括創業經驗，徐光海認為，在科創路上，除了好的團隊及遠景，科研支持是不可或缺的，「我們十分感謝科大能源研究院在研究量產方面給予我們很大支援。」
