大数据时代
收集大数据及数据挖掘技术为近年热门的研究领域，不少跨国企业，如英特尔(Intel)、谷歌(Google)及阿里巴巴等，每年均投放大量资源，挖掘和分析大数据，从而调整经营策略。
香港科技大学计算机科学及工程学系主任、新明工程学教授杨强教授一直致力研究大数据及其实际应用。杨教授于2012年获华为邀请参与创办从事人工智能及大数据研究的诺亚方舟实验室，其后于2013年返回科大继续埋首科研。他指出，应用和分析大数据有助不同机构作出更有效决策，在不同范畴，如教育、医疗、政策制定上都能有所应用，涉及范围十分广阔。
「各行各业其实都可以把大数据付诸应用，在今时今日，我们不应该只把大数据当是一门资讯科技的专修科。不同学科的学生也可从学习大数据中获得益处，为他们日后在不同领域带头领导做好准备。」杨教授说。
大数据中蕴藏大量未曾应用的资料，若企业和机构能从中找出新的商业模式，付诸实行时往往能震撼整个业界。杨教授认为在中国金融业就是一个好例子: 新晋企业带来的思维和竞争带动了整个业界的改革。「中国政府让互联网企业如阿里巴巴及腾讯等开设网上付费平台的决定，冲击了不少传统金融机构。」杨教授说。「面对挑战，传统机构不得不从其他互联网企业引入新思维，而这些新思维日后就改变了整个行业的习惯。这是竞争带来的好处。」
本港的专上教育界也不乏应用大数据的例子。科技大学提供的大规模线上课程(MOOC)收集大量数据，校方在分析数据后会作出各种调整，使课程内容更贴合学生需要; 科大电算机科学及工程学系现正计划于2016-17的学年推出大数据副修课程供全校学生选读。离大数据教育于本港大专院校普及之时已不远了。
