Long-time HKUST Scholar Takes up Key Post at World Bank

In response to media enquiries regarding former HKUST Prof Justin Lin's appointment to the World Bank, a spokesman for HKUST said that Prof Lin joined the University as a Reader in 1995 and then a Professor of Economics from 1997 while also steering the work of Peking University's China Centre for Economic Research (CCEC). In June 2005, he left HKUST to work full-time for CCEC.

During Prof Lin's 10 years of service at HKUST, his research interest included Chinese economy, economic development, agricultural economics and economic history.

HKUST President Paul Chu was elated at Prof Lin's remarkable achievement. "We feel great pride that one of our former faculty members has been chosen for this key post to contribute to the improvement of the world's economies."

Prof Leonard Cheng, Acting Dean of HKUST's Business School, praised Prof Lin as a world renowned scholar in development economics, well known for the development and transitional economic theories guiding China's highly successful economic model. He has high expectations that Prof Lin would have much to contribute to developing economies and expanding World Bank's capacity as a global leader and promoter of world economic development and research.

Prof Francis Lui, HKUST's Chair Professor in Economics who has known Prof Lin for years as a colleague, said, "As the Chief Economist of World Bank, Prof Lin will be able to turn his economic insights into actionable agenda and policies that would benefit the whole world."
