ECE Students Won Gold Prize Award at HKEIA Innovation & Technology Project Competition 2014
Students Chan Kai Chun, Chung Wing Cheong and Lee Kwok Keung, all from the Electronic and Computer Engineering Department, developed the “3D Augmented Reality System of Online Shopping” as their final year project, and won the Gold Award in the 2014 HKEIA Innovation and Technology Project Competition. The competition, co-organized by The Hong Kong Electronic Industries Association (HKEIA) and Hong Kong Electronic Industries Association Education Foundation (HKEIAEF), recognizes outstanding final year projects of excellent technology and innovation.
Being fascinated by virtual reality, the award-winning students decided to apply this technology into online shopping. 3D Augmented Reality System of Online Shopping is a virtual system which provides customers a unique experience in online shopping. They can dress up virtually by clicking a few buttons on the screen which enables them to try on the items anytime, anywhere, via a PC or a Kinect Xbox 360. Virtual dressing provides a “try-it-on” experience immediately to customers before they decide to purchase the item online or not. Other than the perspective of customers, boutiques and shopping malls may also use this system to develop an attraction site so they could promote their products on the spot.
Online shopping has become a widely-spread trend over the years, but up till now customers are still not able to “mix and match” their favorable items before purchasing. After adding more types of virtual items into the system and enhancing the 3D effect of such models, the students hope that they could bring this system to everyday life so that most of the people could enjoy a much promising experience in online shopping.
