HKUST School of Engineering Organizes “Bring Technology to Community” Exhibition
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) School of Engineering is hosting the “Bring Technology to Community” exhibition at Hong Kong Science Museum from 21 - 30 October 2011. The exhibition features the innovative works and research achievements of the School’s students, professors and alumni. A majority of the exhibits are showcased to the public for the first time. Admission is free. The School welcomes members of the public to come and visit the exhibition.
The exhibition is one of the celebratory events for the HKUST 20th anniversary. Demonstrating HKUST’s commitment to contribute to the society with technology, the School of Engineering organizes this exhibition to bring technology to society and widen the public’s horizons on technology. The exhibition also aims to raise the public’s awareness of the close connection between innovations and daily lives, and how technology brings convenience to them.
Exhibits include a 150-billion-pixel digital photo developed by Prof Pedro Sander from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and a team of researchers. The photo set a world record and became the world’s largest digital photo in September 2010. A number of award-winning robot machines designed by HKUST Robotics Team, formed by School of Engineering students, are also displayed. The machines include a mini smart car, an underwater robot and a Robocon contest robot. Also on display is a Braille Embosser, which provides an affordable and environmental-friendly solution for the visually-challenged on computer documents printing; a digital photo frame with cognitive therapy embedded, which is designed for postponing the deterioration of Alzheimer’s; and the digital ink art “Moxi”, which is a combination of modern technology and Chinese art.
Prof Roger Cheng, Associate Dean of Engineering, said, “As an engineering school with globally recognized achievements in both academic and research, it is in our mission that we contribute to the society. We hope to share our research results with the general public and help them to understand how engineering and technology improve our lives.”
