HKUST Remotely Operated Vehicle Team Won Second Place in Virtual RobotX Competition 2023
The HKUST Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Team, a sub-team of the HKUST Robotics Team, gained the Second Place in the Virtual RobotX (VRX) Competition 2023. This is the first time for HKUST to join this simulated maritime competition from the United States. A total of 34 teams from 14 countries and regions participated in the competition this year, including many teams from top universities worldwide.
The HKUST team consists of nine Year 2 and Year 3 undergraduates from various disciplines and programs, spanning computer engineering, computer science, electronic engineering, and Dual Degree Program in Technology and Management.
The VRX Competition was first organized in 2019. It provides a chance for robotics teams from around the world to operate their autonomous surface vehicles (ASV) in a simulation environment based on the Gazebo open-source 3D robotics simulator, which is built by Open Robotics (a US nonprofit corporation focusing on open-source software) and the US Naval Postgraduate School. Participants are tasked with developing innovative maritime robotics solutions for their ASV in a simulated environment.
