SENG Graduates Reunite at Engineering Alumni Summer Mixer

Summer is the perfect time to catch up with old friends and meet new ones. The HKUST School of Engineering (SENG) recently organized the Engineering Alumni Summer Mixer on August 11, 2023. More than 160 engineering alumni, faculty members, and staff attended the networking event, making it an unforgettable celebration of friendships.

HKUST Provost Prof. GUO Yike set the tone for the night with his welcome remarks, thanking alumni, faculty, and staff for their contributions to the University’s growth. “Over the years, HKUST has made a lot of changes and implemented many great ideas that came from you,” he said. His remarks were followed by the playing of the University anthem, which was officially launched earlier this year and marked a significant milestone in HKUST’s three-decade history.

Dean of Engineering Prof. Hong K. LO then came on stage to share the latest developments of the School and how it will continue to support its alumni. “To date, we have a global network of 35,000+ alumni in engineering alone. If you are in the profession, it is very likely to bump into another HKUST graduate. We should be proud and utilize this connection. Moving on to the development of the School, in addition to the HKUST 3.0 plan, which sets to build an innovation park near our campus to support entrepreneurship and industry collaboration, we are actively recruiting 50 new engineering faculty. Our goal is to attract the best talent from Hong Kong and beyond. This will bring new energy and a wider scope of research areas in quantum-tech, health-tech, green-tech, and advanced manufacturing. And as we continue to grow and evolve, we are committed to deepening our connections with our alumni,” he said.

The party was buzzing with excitement as several engineering alumni associations introduced their latest programs, with presentations made by the Presidents of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Alumni Association (CEEAA), Mechanical Engineering Graduates’ Association (MEGA), and Engineering Enterprise Management Alumni Association (EEMAA), leaving the audience in awe.

One of the highlights of the event was the lucky draw, with Prof. GUO Yike, Prof. Hong K. LO, and former Acting Dean of Engineering Prof. Bertram SHI, now Special Advisor to the Vice-President for Research and Development, conducting the session that had everyone on the edge of their seats! The alumni were thrilled to receive lucky draw prizes like cool hoodies and power banks, carrying the proud HKUST brand. Special thanks went to EEMAA for its generous sponsorship of a bottle of Ginjo as a lucky draw prize.

To cap off the night, everyone was excited as each department and division gathered for the group photos. Laughter filled the venue as they created memories and built connections.
