Integrative Systems and Design Undergraduates won Gold Award of ASMPT Technology Award 2023
A team of five undergraduates from the Division of Integrative Systems and Design (ISD) won the Gold Award of ASMPT Technology Award 2023 with their final year project titled “Situational Awareness Location Transponder (SALT): A Phase Difference of Arrival (PDOA)-based System for Enhancing Construction Safety”, supervised by Prof. TSUI Chi-Ying and Dr. Jac LEUNG.
The team comprised Alphor CHEUNG Ho-Hin, Will LIU Pak-Hin, Evan MA Sze-Long, Alan PANG Yu-Yin and Benny SZE Chung-Lam. They proposed a construction site safety solution that employs Bluetooth, Ultra-Wideband (UWB) and Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensing technologies to provide real-time positioning and trajectory, with the aim of reducing accidents involving heavy machinery and workers.
Their system comprises three primary hardware components: the tags that are placed on workers and machinery, anchors that are fixed in certain locations, and displays that give alerts and warnings. The tags and anchors use UWB technology to accurately locate their positions, while Bluetooth allows for communication over long distances. The tags also have IMUs that determine the orientation of machinery, which provides information on context. The comprehensive system is designed to address the practical limitations of construction sites while ensuring cost-effectiveness and adaptability.
The ASMPT Technology Award, now in its eighth year, is an initiative of ASMPT Limited to promote technological innovation in Hong Kong by recognizing excellent final year projects in engineering and related fields from invited universities. This year, 10 outstanding projects were nominated by engineering schools and faculties from CityU, CUHK, HKU, HKUST and PolyU to compete for gold, silver and bronze awards. Judging criteria of the projects and presentations include technical performance, project quality, creativity, originality, applicability and practicability. The project presentation and award ceremony was held on July 7, 2023.
Headquartered in Singapore, ASMPT is a leading global supplier of hardware and software solutions for the manufacture of semiconductors and electronics.
