科大機械人競賽團隊於國際水底機械人大賽香港區賽奪11連冠
香港科技大學（科大）水底機械人（ROV）小隊在2023年MATE國際水底機械人大賽香港區賽成功衛冕，獲得探險家組別的十一屆冠軍。作為科大機械人競賽團隊的其中一支分隊，這支隊伍將在6月22至24日代表香港參加於美國科羅拉多州朗蒙特舉行的MATE國際水底機械人大賽2023決賽。
賽事由國際工程技術學會香港分會承辦，17支來自香港及澳門的中學（護林員組別）及大學（探險家組別）隊伍於4月29及30日齊集將軍澳游泳池，爭奪晉級決賽資格。科大隊伍自2011年參加MATE國際水底機械人大賽香港區賽事，並連續11年獲得冠軍（2022年及2020年香港區賽事受疫情影響而取消）。科大是2019年及2017年兩屆國際賽事的冠軍，成為首支獲得這項殊榮的亞洲隊伍。
2023年的團隊由28名（5位女生及23位男生）來自多個學系的本科生組成，大多為一年級和二年級生。
在比賽中，團隊需要設計一台可以完成模擬真實任務的水底機械人，任務包括為珊瑚礁進行攝影測量，以及保謢海洋可再生能源。製作機械人之餘，團隊還需要準備演示環節、行銷展示、技術報告、安全文件等，用作推廣機械人；而評審會從工程和商業角度評估團隊表現。
國際工程技術學會是世界上最大的工程專業學會之一，其香港分會是英國以外最大的區域分會，在香港和澳門擁有5,000名會員。
MATE國際水底機械人大賽自2002年舉辦。海洋先進技術教育中心（Marine Advanced Technology Education Center，簡稱MATE）位於美國加洲，旨在啟發學生學習和發揮創意，應用STEM知識解決現實世界中的問題，以加強他們的批判性思維、協作能力、創業及創新精神。
