香港科技大学研究团队成功研发全面的三维地图绘制技术及平台，对现时美国和中国的互联网巨头所争相研制的新一代三维地图至为关键。
由计算机科学及工程学系权龙教授率领的科大团队，仅用上照片和电脑程式，便可为任何地方制作完整的三维图像。权教授的团队正计划开展制作首张香港的三维地图。
权教授表示，互联网巨头谷歌（Google）地图在欧美覆盖几个城市。权教授的团队用超过十年时间开发的演算法，能透过飞机、直升机或无人驾驶飞机在高空拍摄的影像，替建筑物及地标制成高解像度的侧面图片，无需再依赖人手接驳电脑图片，从而避免地图失真。新技术塑造的三维地图能够贴近真实，而高地面解像度可准确至数厘米距离，质素更胜谷歌及苹果公司的地图。
权龙教授及其团队表示这项技术具潜力吸引大量的互联网使用者、辨识城市景点及分析住宅区的行为活动等，有助城市规划、物流公司和导航公司的工作。
除与大型互联网公司合作外，科大最近亦伙拍法国的跨国航天、防卫、运输和保安公司泰雷兹集团（Thales Group），由无人驾驶飞机绘制地图用作执行搜索和救援任务。双方签订的协议将有助鼓励创新、培育年轻的创意工程师，以及促进研究人员之间的积极交流。
