Alumni Kaleidoscope: Kylie Lam - MSc(CIVL), BEng(CIVL)

Kylie has been with Ove Arup & Partners Hong Kong Ltd., a global company of designers, engineers, planners and business consultants, since she graduated from HKUST. She is currently Director at the company, and has been involved in numerous major initiatives throughout her tenure. She has been involved in the engineering design of many urban landmarks across the region including the National Stadium in Beijing (Bird's Nest) and Canton Tower in Guangzhou. She was also the project manager for Victoria Dockside which is reckoned to be the most remarkable new mixed development in the Kowloon Peninsula that reshapes the Tsim Sha Tsui Victoria Harbour front.

One of her main responsibilities for the Bird's Nest project was to develop a 3-D analytical model for the facility's main steel roof structure. It was quite a challenge for Kylie and her colleagues to overcome the many technical problems in building the model, which had a very special geometry and comprised over 10,000 elements. Despite the difficulties involved, Kyle is glad to have been involved in building the Bird's Nest and being a part of Olympic history. It was with a very special sense of pride that she took her seat in the National Stadium as a spectator to watch the Olympics unfold.

"I am always proud to be a civil engineering alumna of HKUST," says Kylie. "The learning path provided me with abundant technical knowledge and analytical skills required for my career development. I am thankful to the HKUST School of Engineering for giving me a key to many unforgettable experiences."
