科大的可持續發展進程
國際知名的科研大學香港科技大學致力建立一個環保校園，並旨在於廣泛社區擔任領導角色，以實踐和推動可持續發展概念。
其中值得注意的例子，就是科大在創校之初採用海水製冷技術，為學術大樓中央冷氣系統供冷。其後，科大把這項先驅技術擴展至全新落成、樓高八層的鄭裕彤樓，透過擴充原有的中央供冷站產能，建立區域性製冷系統，從而達致最高效能和減少碳排放。
上述項目有效節省數百萬元的營運成本和減低耗電量，因而得到國際認可，獲美國能源工程師學會頒授2016年亞太區年度能源計劃大獎。預期這項優化計劃可減低鄭裕彤樓的每年耗電量達20%至35%，並節省港幣150萬元的營運及維修費用。
在「科大2020 可持續發展挑戰」計劃下，科大承諾在2020年或之前減低整個校園的耗電量達10%。這項行動計劃旨在建立可持續發展社群網路，研發和評估可持續發展教育的新路向，並率先減少能源消耗和固體廢物，以及減排溫室氣體。
自2014/15學年起，科大溫室氣體排放和整體固體廢物量已分別減少逾13%及4%，而廢物回收量則增加15%。另外，科大已投放資源落實多項減廢計劃，而本校學生亦盡展所長，當中「可持續校園領袖計劃」的學生環保代表（Eco-reps）舉辦綠色市集（Green Products Fair）和Lunch Box Go Green等環保活動，藉此於校園內推廣可持續發展概念。
近日，科大成為首家加入Global Consortium for Sustainability Outcomes的亞洲區大學，這個全球網絡由十家大學組成，致力制定可持續發展方案。展望未來，科大將在可持續發展教育方面作出更大努力，目標是為學生的體驗式學習提供生活空間實驗室，並在這個充滿活力和步伐急速的都市裡，創下頂尖研究成果和發展可持續的營運模式。
