提前體驗科研滋味
香港科技大學「本科生研究計劃」（UROP）提供機會讓本科生在國際知名的教授帶領下參與科研，充分展現大學對學術研究和教育創新的熱誠。
UROP為一項前瞻性的教育方法，計劃不但能夠為香港提前培育科技研究人才，亦有助科大生增進嶄新知識和擴闊視野，例如於國際學術期刊發表研究論文、在國際會議匯報研究結果，以及親身到全球頂尖研究機構進行交流學習。
計劃於2005年推出以來，已推動逾2,500名學生開拓他們感興趣的領域，增進知識。2015-16學年共有379名學生及142名教授參與計劃，研究項目達292個。完成計劃的學生均可角逐年度UROP獎項。
本年度的UROP獎項冠軍由計算機科學系二年級學生Sepanta Zeighami奪得，他是科大唯一一名在讀的伊朗籍本科生，得獎的研究項目為「降低數據庫的『平均後悔比率』」。有關研究建議系統可首先對網頁使用者搜尋所得的資料進行篩選，從而為他們提供少量有「代表性」的建議，藉此提高對搜尋結果的滿意程度。Sepanta表示參加計劃讓他獲益良多：「研究獲獎給予我很大的鼓舞，對我日後申請攻讀哲學博士學位亦有助益。」
亞軍得主科技及管理學雙學位課程四年級學生陳若然指出：「就讀本科時參與科研，讓我能更早認清研究方向和焦點。」他的研究項目為「運用『資料可視化』解釋財經新聞中的社會及經濟關係」，先收集大量財經新聞數據進行分析，然後將數據透過可視化（visualization）的形式表達，能反映金融市場的見解，有助讀者了解數據背後的意義。陳若然曾在2016國際大數據和智能計算會議上發表有關研究。
