GAME for a Sustainable Future

To further promote UN Sustainable Development Goal 12 Responsible Consumption and Production among university community, the Hong Kong Sustainable Campus Consortium partnered with Press Start Academy in organising “SDG#12 GAMIthon”, a hackathon for students to brainstorm solutions through applying gamification in a sustainability context.

49 students from 7 local institutions participated in GAMIthon program.

They teamed up with students from different backgrounds to work on a proposal with a gamified approach to promote four streams: “Food Loss”, “Invisible Resources - Energy and Water”, “Production and Consumption”, and “Sustainable Campus”. In the two-day hybrid hackathon on 11 and 12 June, participants collaborated, discussed, and applied the gamification and SDG 12 concepts learned from the pre-event workshops, to develop a game solution. Through collective effort and creativity, each team had impressed the audience with their amazing ideas, showing the power of youth to strive for a more sustainable future in a more interesting way.

The winner of GAMIthon went to Team 11 The Greenist, a group of talented students from HKUST and EDUHK. They proposed a board game to raise players’ awareness of sustainable consumption, and to encourage the public to live a green life without sacrificing happiness. “We want to let the players know their actions can make a big difference to the world,” said the team. With HKD20,000 funding on game development, HKD5,000 cash prize and mentorship, the Greenist will further develop their game and showcase the product in September 2022. And we look forward to their progress in the following months.
