HKUST Research raises Hope for Stroke Patients
香港科技大学生物化学系的傑出科学家张明傑教授，荣获国家颁授2006年自然科学獎，以表扬他的科学贡献，成功阐释了一系列控制神经信号传导中的蛋白相互作用的机理。
张教授說：「当前沒有治疗中风的方法，但相信我们的研究，可以为找出潛在的中风治疗法，提供重要的科学根据，至少可減轻中风对人体的损害，甚至可望治疗中风或逆转中风的损害。」
张教授的研究成果，在国际著名的《科学》、《自然结构生物学》、《自然结构和分子生物学》及《美国国家科学院院志》等权威学刊上发表。
国家自然科学獎是中国所颁授的最高学术荣誉，获獎者在自然科学领域的基础研究有傑出成就。国家主席胡锦涛和国务院总理溫家宝，於2月27日在北京举行的国家科学技术獎励大会上，亲身向获獎者颁授獎状。
张教授的研究成果，揭示有关蛋白在脑部如何运作，最终可能惠及中风病人。
张教授解释，「脑部的信号，是由多种神经传递介质传达。神经传递介质的接收，则依赖於神经受体和离子通道，这些受体和离子通道又被多种『结构蛋白』集合成大分量的多蛋白复合体。」
张教授的研究，就是找出「结构蛋白」如何构建脑细胞信号传导复合体的结构和生化基础。他表示，这项研究的重要性，不仅有助了解脑细胞消息传递的过程，而且更可为治疗诸如中风之类的神经退化疾病的药物，提供指引。
