学以致用 回馈社群
香港科技大学水底机器人分队在本年4月举行的第九届IET／MATE 香港／亚洲地区水底机器人挑战赛大专组别中，勇夺冠军殊荣。分队由14名不同学系的科大学生组成。这已是科大在同一项比赛中第四度夺标。
除参加比赛外，科大学生还学以致用，将他们的工程知识融入社区服务计划。今年，科大水底机器人分队为心光盲人院暨学校的儿童举办机器人制作研讨会，推广工程知识。
心光学校在去年11月举办科普周，邀请设计水底机器人的科大学生到校主持讲座，并分享制作机器人的经验。讲座引起心光学生对这个工程项目的兴趣。其后12名学生组队参加机器人设计比赛，而科大的师生则在心光学生设计的过程中提供协助。
尽管面对视力障碍，但这并没影响心光学生团队完成这项艰巨工程的决心，也让学生从中获取宝贵的学习心得和体验。为确保机器人制作过程的安全，科大师生提出以水泵设计取代螺旋桨系统。
在科大学生的协助和指导下，心光学校的队伍在初级组赛事荣获亚军。
科大工学院环球社会中心总监胡锦添教授表示︰“视障学生首次参赛就赢得奖项，令人感到非常鼓舞。在这次比赛中，心光学生体现了良好的团队合作精神。”同时担任科大学生团队顾问的胡教授补充道︰“我期待科大继续参加更多相关活动，把工程知识融入社区服务计划中。”
