Recruitment of Student Helpers for Science Focus

The School of Science is looking for talented student writers and graphic designers to produce a bilingual science magazine called “Science Focus” targeted at Hong Kong secondary school science students of Form 4- 6. The initiative is an opportunity for HKUST undergraduate science students to inspire young minds and nurture their interest in science. The articles will include four main streams of science – life science, biomedical science, environmental science and physical science. We are looking for undergraduate science students to write and produce the magazine, under the supervision of staff and faculty from the School of Science.

Here’s what you need to know:

• This will be a one-year commitment.
• The time required from you is approximately 20 hours per issue (give or take).
• We publish 3 issues per year, with around 4 months to prepare in between issues.
• Each member of the Editorial Board will be paid a total of HK$3000 divided into 3 installments. An installment will be paid after an issue is complete.
• You will be published! Whether you are a writer, reporter or graphic designer, your name and work will be printed in the magazine.

We are looking for students to fill the following positions:

• Editors (English: article writing)
• Editors (Chinese: article writing and some translation)
• Graphic Designers (layout, illustrations)

Ideal Participants:

• Good command of spoken and written English and Chinese
• Excellent time management skills
• Knowledge of design programs such as Adobe Indesign, Illustrator and Photoshop for graphic designers
• Enthusiastic, self-motivated and creative

By participating in this initiative, you will be part of an HKUST publication and you will be involved in advocating your major to the public. This is an opportunity for you to hone your design and writing skills, expand your curriculum vitae and meet new people! We welcome science students from all disciplines and backgrounds. Important: If you are applying for the position of Graphic Designer, please include your portfolio or examples of graphic work that you have done in the past. If you are applying for an Editor position and you have written articles or have an existing blog, feel free to send that in with your CV.
