HKUST Students Won Outstanding Students Award in Building Information Modeling
A team from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at HKUST received the Outstanding Students Award at the Autodesk Hong Kong BIM Awards 2019 for their project “Integrating BIM and IoT for Facility Management: Smart Facility Management for a Smarter Campus.”
Supervised by Prof. Jack CHENG, the team consists of PhD student Helen KWOK Hoi-Ling, 2019 graduates CHEN Weiwei (PhD), CHAN Sum-Chau and Sampriti DWIVEDY (both Dual Degree Program in Technology and Management).
In their project, the team leveraged the complementary strengths of building information modeling (BIM) and internet-of-things (IoT) technology and proposed an advanced building automation system for facility management at HKUST campus. They built a digital twin of a HKUST lecture theatre, which can easily retrieve instant sensor data from different systems in the theatre and allow facility managers to better interact with the facility. The also developed data-driven machine learning models to enable automated decision-making process on the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system. Their efforts contributed to a project under HKUST’s Sustainable Smart Campus as a Living Lab initiative.
The awards celebrate building industry professionals and educators who help to drive the transformation of the building industry through the usage of BIM, and who help to evolve the industry to a more efficient and sustainable era. The awards are presented to the organizations that can clearly demonstrate the biggest benefits to the projects and to the organizations from BIM usage.
