Dual Degree Student Head Starts Career in Investment Banking

Among 2500 applicants from across Asia, Oscar Leung, a third year Dual Degree student in Civil & Structural Engineering and General Business Management, has been selected as 1 of 15 summer interns in Asia, to be working in the Global Markets Division of HSBC Corporate, Investment Banking and Markets (CIBM). Being the first HKUST student selected to join the Program, Oscar will have the opportunity to work with top-notch investment bankers and finance professionals, and gain true global investment banking experience.

Valuable opportunity did not come easy, Oscar had to go through a rigorous selection process consisting of online tests on analytical aptitude, telephone and face to face interviews on communication skills, and case analysis and presentations in group setting on critical thinking skills and ability to work in teams.

To prepare for the interviews and assessments, apart from seeking advices from friends in the US that had been interviewed for similar positions, Oscar carefully studied the annual report and other recent publications of HSBC.

Displaying a focused career objective, acute business sense, solid numerical analysis aptitude, and the ability to stay calm and poised under pressure, Oscar impressed the Assessment Panel and was selected for the intern position.

When asked if he has any advices for his fellow students, Oscar replies, “know what you want to do and try hard to achieve it!” Oscar finds his calling in investment banking during his study in the Dual Degree program where he receives solid quantitative training in the rigorous engineering discipline and acquires an extensive repertoire of business knowledge. The determination is strengthened after taking finance courses at the University of Michigan during his year of exchange, followed by a summer intern experience in commercial banking. From then on, he regularly reads up on journals and newspapers to fuel his interests and keep abreast with the latest happenings in the financial industry.

Starting from June 26, Oscar will embark on a 10-week induction program, immersed in HSBC CIBM's Global Markets business which is ranked among the largest in the world, and make valuable contribution through participating in financial product design. He will also have a busy calendar of business briefings, workshops and social events.

Looking forward to the experience with great excitement and anticipation, Oscar resolves “being a student groomed in Hong Kong and with international exposure, I am glad to have the opportunity to make contributions to HSBC - the World’s Local Bank!”
