Discover, Connect, and Have Fun: Celebrating HKUST’s Rich Biodiversity

HKUST is home to an incredible diversity of wildlife, including over 120 tree species, 100 butterfly species, 75 bird species, as well as porcupines, bats, and wild boars! These fascinating green friends and creatures inhabit the lush forests that provide us with clean air, the streams that flow down to the Hall IV pond, the vibrant Chinese Garden Pond adorned with colorful plants, and the rocky shores that connect our campus to the breathtaking Port Shelter.

To celebrate and raise awareness of this rich biodiversity, we are launching a series of events that offer students and staff a wonderful opportunity to engage with and appreciate the biodiversity that surrounds us.

1. Your Backyard, Your Lens: Biodiversity Photo Competition

From February to March, unleash your creativity with "Your Backyard, Your Lens," our Biodiversity Photo Competition! This event invites you to explore the breathtaking biodiversity of our campus through your lens and share your personal connection with it. By sharing your stunning photos of the flora and fauna that thrive in our backyard, you not only showcase your artistic talents but also help highlight the rich biodiversity that might be underappreciated.

2. Leaf Your Grade Behind: Plant Adoption Party

Get ready for "Leaf Your Grade Behind," our Plant Adoption Party in late March! This event is designed to promote the benefits of connecting with nature by allowing participants to adopt a plant after engaging in fun and informative games. These activities will teach you about the positive impacts of plants on our mental and physical well-being, as well as the vital role they play in our ecosystem. In addition, it’s for you to take a break from the stressful deadlines.

3. Your Place in the Wild HKUST: Biodiversity Personality Test

Have you ever wondered which animal or plant you might resemble? Join us for "Your Place in the Wild HKUST," our Biodiversity Personality Test in April! This fun and interactive quiz will help you discover your biodiversity counterpart while providing fascinating insights into the unique characteristics of local species.

Join Us in Raising Awareness!

These events are not just about fun and games; they play a crucial role in building a culture of awareness and appreciation for biodiversity within our HKUST community. By participating, you will help spread the message of conservation and the importance of protecting our natural environment.

Stay tuned for more details on dates and registration information. We encourage everyone to get involved and make a difference in our campus ecosystem. Together, we can raise awareness and foster a deeper appreciation for the biodiversity that enriches our lives at HKUST!
