How to Improve Air Quality in the Region?
The 5th International Symposium on Regional Air Quality Management in Rapidly Developing Economic Regions Hong Kong Forum was held on 20 Nov 2017 at HKUST to discuss how to solve the air pollution problems in the region.
Prof. YUAN Zibing of School of Environment and Energy of Guangzhou’s South China University of Technology suggested that, regional governments should take the opportunity of Greater Bay Area economic integration to extend the collaboration to environmental protection like uniforming the air quality management and standards in the region.
Prof. Jimmy FUNG, Head of Division of Environment and Sustainability (ENVR) of HKUST, also supported in setting a common air quality standards for the region which will continue to be tightened in the future. He believed that it could be an incentive for both China and Hong Kong Governments to keep improving national/reginal air quality standards.
Prof. Alexis LAU of ENVR urged the Hong Kong government to set up hundreds more air pollution sensors cross the city to better monitor air quality as there are only 16 air quality monitoring stations currently which are not enough to reflect the air quality of a specific location.
