科大教授榮獲國家自然科學獎
香港科技大學生物化學系的傑出科學家張明傑教授，榮獲國家頒授2006年自然科學獎，以表揚他的科學貢獻，成功闡釋了一系列控制神經訊號傳導中的蛋白相互作用的機理。
張教授說：「目前沒有治療中風的方法，但相信我們的研究，可以為找出潛在的中風治療法，提供重要的科學根據，至少可減輕中風對人體的損害，甚至可望治療中風或逆轉中風的損害。」
張教授的研究成果，在國際著名的《科學》、《自然結構生物學》、《自然結構和分子生物學》及《美國國家科學院院志》等權威學刊上發表。
國家自然科學獎是中國所頒授的最高學術榮譽，獲獎者在自然科學領域的基礎研究有傑出成就。國家主席胡錦濤和國務院總理溫家寶，於2月27日在北京舉行的國家科學技術獎勵大會上，親身向獲獎者頒授獎狀。
張教授的研究成果，揭示有關蛋白在腦部如何運作，最終可能惠及中風病人。
張教授解釋，「腦部的訊號，是由多種神經傳遞介質傳達。神經傳遞介質的接收，則依賴於神經受體和離子通道，這些受體和離子通道又被多種『架構蛋白』集合成大分量的多蛋白複合體。」
張教授的研究，就是找出「架構蛋白」如何構建腦細胞訊號傳導複合體的結構和生化基礎。他表示，這項研究的重要性，不僅有助了解腦細胞訊息傳遞的過程，而且更可為治療諸如中風之類的神經退化疾病的藥物，提供指引。
