學以致用 回饋社群
香港科技大學水底機械人分隊在本年4月舉行的第九屆IET／MATE 香港／亞洲地區水底機械人挑戰賽大專組別中勇奪冠軍殊榮。分隊由14名不同學系的科大學生所組成。這已是科大於同一項比賽中第四度奪標。
除參與比賽外，科大學生亦學以致用，將他們的工程知識融入社區服務計劃。今年，科大水底機械人分隊為心光盲人院暨學校的學童舉辦機械人製作研討會，推廣工程知識。
心光學校於去年11月舉辦科普周，邀請設計水底機械人的科大學生到校主持講座，並分享製作機械人的經驗。講座引起心光學生對這個工程項目的興趣。其後12名學生組隊參加機械人設計比賽，而科大的師生則在心光學生設計的過程中提供協助。
儘管面對視力障礙，但無阻心光學生團隊完成這項艱鉅工程的決心，也讓學生從中獲取寶貴的學習心得和體驗。為確保機械人製作過程的安全，科大師生提出以水泵設計取代螺旋槳系統。
在科大學生的協助和指導下，心光學校的隊伍於初級組賽事榮獲亞軍。
科大工學院環球社會中心總監胡錦添教授表示︰「視障學生首次參賽便贏得獎項，令人感到非常鼓舞。在是次比賽中，心光學生體現了良好的團隊合作精神。」同時擔任科大學生團隊顧問的胡教授補充︰「我期待科大繼續參加更多相關活動，把工程知識融入社區服務計劃中。」
