HKUST Engineering Ranks No.18 Globally

The newly released Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2018 by Subject: Engineering and Technology ranked HKUST No.18 worldwide and No.1 in Hong Kong. HKUST rose one place from No.19 last year and is one of the four universities from Asia and the only one from Hong Kong to make it to the top 20.

Five subjects are used to create this ranking, namely general engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, mechanical and aerospace engineering, civil engineering, and chemical engineering.

The engineering and technology subject rankings employ the same range of 13 performance indicators used in the overall World University Rankings 2018, brought together with scores provided under five categories: teaching (the learning environment), research (volume, income and reputation), citations (research influence), international outlook (staff, students and research) and industry income (innovation).

Prof Tim Cheng, Dean of Engineering, said, “We are greatly encouraged by our new ranking, which climbed yet another position from last year, to 18th this year. We will continue to strive to maintain and even improve on this ranking in the years to come – not just to enhance learning for the students and support research for the faculty, but also to collaborate with industry and achieve breakthroughs in invention.”
