Ground Breaking of the Education and Research Base of PKU-HKUST Medical Center in Shenzhen (Chinese only)
深圳北京大學香港科技大學醫學中心於1月下旬，舉行教學科研基地奠基典禮，出席嘉賓包括深圳市衛生局黨委書記、局長江捍平、深圳市委常委、常務副市長劉應力、深圳市副市長梁道行、北京大學醫學部副主任方偉崗教授，以及香港科技大學副校長（行政及總務）黃玉山教授。
科大副校長黃玉山教授表示，醫學中心的科研教學樓建成後，必定可以為醫學教育和科研提供更先進的配套和設備，使醫學中心繼續發揚北京大學、香港科技大學與深圳本地的合作優勢，在各方面取得長足的發展，開創更廣的前景。
深圳北京大學香港科技大學醫學中心由深圳市政府、北京大學、香港科技大學三家合作建設，2001年經深圳市政府批准，設立為正局級事業單位，同年9月26日正式掛牌。醫學中心於2004年10月著手籌建生物醫學研究所，並聘任了科大生物化學系主任葉玉如教授擔任所長。
黃玉山教授表示，成立醫學中心的目的，在於充份利用北京大學、香港科技大學兩所院校的整體醫療、教學、科研力量和廣泛的國際交流和合作關係，借鑒國外醫學中心模式，建立一個以臨床為中心，整合科研、教學、醫療、產業於一體的新型醫學中心。黃教授指出，「今天的奠基典禮，標誌著這項強強合作計劃的一個新里程。」醫學中心經過去四年運作，在這個基礎上，今後三方的合作，將取得更豐碩的成果。
深圳北京大學香港科技大學醫學中心教學科研基地及醫院外科住院等設施，總建築面積達22萬平方米。科研基地的科教樓初步預計於2008年底落成。
