Two More Elevations to IEEE Fellow among SENG Faculty Members

The School is proud to announce two more faculty members, Prof Ricky Lee, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and Prof Zexiang Li, Professor of Electronic and Computer Engineering, will be elevated to IEEE Fellow, effective from January of 2008.

Each year, following a rigorous evaluation procedure, the IEEE Fellow Committee recommends a selected group of recipients for one of the Institute’s most prestigious honors, elevation to IEEE Fellow. This year, a total of four members from Hong Kong have been selected to receive this honor, and SENG faculty members scooped half of them.

In the citations, the IEEE praises Prof Lee for his contributions to solder joint reliability and the development of three dimensional packaging technologies, and Prof Li for his contributions to robotic manipulation, nonholonomic motion planning and workpiece localization.

Professor Ricky Lee joined HKUST in 1993. He received his BS degree from National Taiwan University, his MS degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University and PhD degree from the School of Aeronautics & Astronautics at Purdue University. Currently he is the Director of EPACK Lab at HKUST. His research activities cover flip chip technologies, through silicon vias, 3D packaging, LED packaging, lead-free soldering and solder joint reliability. Prof Lee has been elected as Fellow of ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) in 2003 and Fellow of IoP (Institute of Physics, UK) in 1999. He was awarded a CPMT (Components, Packaging & Manufacturing Technologies) President’s Award in 2002 for his outstanding contributions to the IEEE-CPMT Society, and elected a Distinguished Speaker of IEEE-CPMT in 2006.

Professor Zexiang Li joined HKUST in 1992. He received his BS degree in Electrical Engineering and Economics from Carnegie-Mellon University, his MA degree in Mathematics and PhD degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of California at Berkeley. Professor Li received the National Natural Science Award (3rd class) from China, the University Scholar Award from Carnegie-Mellon University, the E.I. Jury Award from UC Berkeley, the Research Initiation Award from the National Science Foundation, the ALCOA Fellowship from the ALCOA Foundation and the E. Anthony Fellowship from UC Berkeley.

With the two latest additions, SENG has now 14 IEEE Fellows among its faculty members.
