Statement by Heads of Universities Committee

We welcome the Chief Executive’s 2017 Policy Address which states the Government’s position in support of the higher education sector of Hong Kong.  It also reflects the Government’s commitment to a comprehensive and holistic initiative to enhance the competitiveness of Hong Kong education sector internationally.  In particular, we very much support the Government’s funding initiative for research and development, with a goal to double the total expenditure on R&D as a percentage of the Gross Domestic Product to about 1.5% in five years’ time.  We also welcome the setting up of the Hostel Development Fund for the provision of additional hostel places, which will help solve the problem of shortage in hostel places and thus improve the learning experience of students in Hong Kong.

We will work proactively with the Government on the implementation of these initiatives in the higher education sector for the betterment of Hong Kong.
