Prof Amine Bermak, Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department, received the IEEE Chester Sall Award from Dr Paul Snopko, the IEEE CE Awards Chairman, during the 2006 IEEE Consumer Electronics Award Ceremony in Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. The award is given to recognize the best paper published in the IEEE Transactions on Consumer Electronics in 2004. Prof Bermak and his Australian collaborators, Prof F Boussaid and Prof A Bouzerdoum, proposed a novel ultra-low power operating technique for Mega-Pixels current-mediated CMOS imagers. The proposed operating technique reduces power consumption by more than 2 orders of magnitude, while allowing for on-read-out fixed pattern noise correction and improved linearity and dynamic range. Moreover, power consumption becomes independent of both read-out speed and imager array size making the proposed architecture suitable for consumer Mega-pixels CMOS imagers.
