Innovation Contest 4CSRtech by France-HKUST Innovation Hub Received Positive Feedback
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) co-organized the Innovation Contest 4CSRtech with the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong & Macau and Orange Group on November 3-4, 2018, with eight finalist teams coming from Hong Kong, Mainland China, Taiwan and India.
The contest centered on the theme of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and is the first event organized by the France-HKUST Innovation Hub that is open to the general public. Inspired by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the contest aims to identify innovative solutions for sustainability challenges in the fast changing world, explore new value creation business models, and more importantly, empower everyone to drive the change.
The teams were required to propose products or solutions to solve challenges from five categories, namely social labor, health and safety, environment management, business ethics, and capability building. After a rigorous deliberation among five panel members from the industry and research institutions, two champion teams were selected for their innovative proposals based on criteria including the originality of ideas, impact to society, presentation quality, and potential for industry engagement:

Project title: A Smarter Way to Construct

The HKUST team addressed two challenges on health and safety as well as capability building. They proposed a mental health monitoring system that helps companies to take preventative measures to assist employees under stress.
A start-up at the Hong Kong Science Park, BeeInventor Ltd worked on the health and safety challenge. It proposed an integrated smart device mounted on construction workers’ safety helmets to provide real-time health and safety monitoring and site management.
Two Honorable Mentions were given to teams from the French International School and the Indian Institute of Management respectively.
Prof. Tim CHENG, Dean of Engineering at HKUST, was pleased to see the high turnout for the contest.
Ms. Paule IGNATIO, Deputy Consul General of France in Hong Kong and Macau said, “We were delighted to provide this great platform to gather all the talents to reduce CSR risks and address new challenges.”
The France-HKUST Innovation Hub was launched in 2017 to incubate ideas and opportunities, and foster HKUST research and development partnerships in science, technology and education with French institutions and companies.
