HKUST Spearheads Four Large AI Models to Revolutionize Healthcare

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has introduced four innovative AI-driven models designed to enhance the medical and healthcare sectors. These models assist both general and specialist medical practitioners in diagnosing and prognosing up to 30 types of cancers and diseases, achieving accuracy levels akin to those of experienced medical professionals. The development of these models is supported by HKUST's new AI supercomputing facility, which enables them to leverage extensive data sets and advanced machine training techniques.

The four AI models include MOME, which focuses on breast cancer diagnosis using MRI scans, achieving high accuracy in distinguishing between malignant and benign lumps. mSTAR serves as a pathology assistant tool, streamlining the generation of pathology reports and enhancing diagnostic consistency by analyzing whole slide images. MedDr acts as a versatile medical generalist, capable of answering questions and generating reports, while XAIM provides transparency in AI decision-making, helping healthcare professionals understand how these models reach their conclusions.

Prof. Hao CHEN, Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at HKUST, as well as the project lead, emphasizes the potential of these AI tools to assist doctors in improving diagnostics and personalizing treatment plans. HKUST aims to further develop a range of AI applications for clinical tasks, particularly in precision oncology and computer-assisted interventions, by collaborating with clinical partners to drive long-term improvements in patient care. Their previous contributions to medical AI include models for brain tumor prognosis and early detection of Alzheimer's disease, demonstrating HKUST's commitment to advancing healthcare through technology.
