HKUST Faculty Elected Leibniz-Sozietät Academician

Prof Reinhard Renneberg, Professor of Department of Chemistry at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) was newly elected Academician of Leibniz-Sozietät. This is the first time such an honor was bestowed on a Hong Kong-based scholar.

Leibniz-Sozietät is among the world's finest scientific and cultural research institutions, which seeks to crystallize the 300 years of continuous academic tradition stretching from the Prussian Academy of Sciences and the Brandenburg Society of Sciences in 1700 over the Academy of Sciences of the German Democratic Republic to the present. Now having over 300 members, it draws together renowned experts and established academicians in varied scientific and cultural disciplines, among whom are founders of the Humboldt University Wilhelm von Humboldt and Alexander von Humboldt. The unanimous vote secured by Prof Renneberg for academicianship attests to his excellence in education and research, whose impact is felt and recognized internationally.

Joining HKUST in 1994, Prof Renneberg specializes in fields including bioanalytical chemistry, nanotechnology, biosensorics and bioelectronics. He is the founder of the Sino-German Nano-Analytical Lab (SiGNAL) at HKUST, where he initiated a series of biotests including the world's fastest heart attack test, and biosensors for detecting virus, marine pollution, human and animal health. He is also the author of the worldwide bestselling textbook  Biotechnology for Beginners.
