HKUST Donor Reception

Supported by both long-term donors and new friends of HKUST, the HKUST Donor Reception was successfully held on September 12, 2017. Donors spent a joyful afternoon together with HKUST faculty members, staff and students, and gained a more in-depth understanding about the University's development and achievements.

Our Global Vision Campaign — a fundraising campaign in celebration of HKUST's 25th anniversary — was well-received by the community and successfully concluded in 2017. To echo the University's 25th anniversary slogan Innovating Today, Imagining Tomorrow, the campaign's primary strategic development and fundraising objectives included Creation of New Knowledge and Enrichment of Student Life. The Donor Reception was held to thank our supporters for their generous contributions and celebrate the success of the campaign.

The event kicked off with Prof Tony F. Chan, President of HKUST welcoming the audience and introducing the program, followed by a short video showcasing key milestones and achievements of the University's Global Vision Campaign.

Support from donors helps faculty conduct research, create new knowledge and enrich student life. To highlight this, a UST professor and two students — all of whom were beneficiaries of the generous contributions from our supporters — shared how the donations impacted their work and their university experiences with the audience. Professor David Lam from the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering shared his research on an innovative device for ischemic stroke treatment. Two students from the “SIGHT” team (Student Innovation for Global Health Technology) also shared their projects in places like Cambodia to provide innovative solutions for some health issues.

Next, the officiating guests Dr John Chan (Court Chairman), Prof John Chai (Council Vice-Chairman), Prof Jack Lau (Vice-Chairman of the Institutional Advancement and Outreach Committee of the Council), Prof Tony F. Chan (President), Prof Wei Shyy (Executive Vice-President and Provost) and Dr Eden Woon (Vice-President for Institutional Advancement) proposed a toast to guests and thanked donors for their continued support to HKUST.

The grand finale of the day was a lucky draw wherein all “prizes"  were “Made by HKUST”. Developed and commercialized by members of the University, the prizes truly showcased HKUST's strength in technological innovation. The three alumni who sponsored the prizes also attended the event to show their support for their alma mater.
