Appointment of Associate Dean of Engineering
The School of Engineering is pleased to announce the appointment of Prof Richard H Y So, Professor of the Department of Industrial Engineering and Decision Analytics (IEDA), to succeed Prof King Lun Yeung as the new Associate Dean of Engineering (Research and Graduate Studies), with effect from July 1, 2018.
Prof So received his BSc in Electronic Engineering (1987) and PhD in Engineering and Applied Sciences (1995) from the University of Southampton, England. He joined HKUST as an Assistant Professor in September 1995 and rose through the ranks to become a Professor in 2011. He has served as the Postgraduate Coordinator of the IEDA Department and on the School of Engineering’s Postgraduate Studies Committee since 2010. His research expertise lies on bio-inspired signal processing on image and audio data, computational ergonomics, and functional brain study focusing on human visual and auditory systems. Prof So’s contribution to the field has been widely recognized by numerous fellowships. In 2014, he became the first in Hong Kong who were elected a Fellow of International Ergonomics Association, a prestigious honor held by less than 100 people worldwide at the time of the election. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors, Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, and Hong Kong Ergonomics Society.
Prof So has been active in providing professional service to the academic community. He has served as the Co-Editor-in-Chief for Displays since 2014, a major international journal on display technology and perception issues. He is the first Chinese person to hold the title. He is also a Scientific Editor of Applied Ergonomics and an Editor of Ergonomics.
The School would also like to pay tribute and thank Prof King Lun Yeung for his leadership and valuable contributions as the Associate Dean of Engineering (Research and Graduate Studies) in the past four years. Under his stewardship, the School has been successful in the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme and made remarkable advancements in broadening postgraduate education, diversifying postgraduate student body and pursuing multidisciplinary and team-based research.
