HKUST Enters into Partnership with the Global Association of Risk Professionals

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology’s School of Business and Management (HKUST Business School) has entered into an academic partnership with the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP). The partnership entails that the HKUST MSc in Investment Management Program aligns with industry-recognized standards, and thus provides better opportunity for students to become globally qualified risk management professionals.

GARP is a not-for-profit organization and the only globally recognized association for risk managers. The association aims to advance the risk profession through education and the promotion of best practices. It offers certification for financial risk management leading to a Financial Risk Manager (FRM) designation, which is the most respected and widely recognized certification for financial risk management.

“FRM is a common designation that employers value when looking for risk professionals and is often mentioned in job advertisements for finance professionals,” said Prof Vidhan K. Goyal, Head of the Finance Department at the HKUST Business School. “Academic partnerships play a crucial role in educating the next generation of qualified risk managers. By closely working with industry players and professional associations, our Program reflects the latest developments in the industry and is designed to prepare students to succeed in the challenging finance industry.”

“GARP is very pleased to announce the addition of HKUST to the GARP Partnership. The MSc in Investment Management offered by the HKUST Business School is a highly regarded, rigorous program. The curriculum offered provides a solid theoretical as well as practical foundation for its students, ensuring they will be well-positioned to pursue the FRM designation and able to assume strategic roles within the global risk management profession,” said Dr Chris Donohue, Managing Director – Head of Research & Educational Programs, GARP.

By teaching 70% of the knowledge required for the FRM exam, the HKUST MSc in Investment Management Program is structured to meet the growing demand for specialized finance professions including risk management. With part-time and full-time study modes, the Program has also formed academic partnerships with professional associations such as the Chartered Alternatives Investment Analysts (CAIA) and the Chartered Financial Analysts (CFA).
