As this year's host, Professor Wei Shyy, HKUST's Acting President, together with Mr Kenneth Li, Managing Director of Carlton City Hotel Singapore, representing the donors, Dr & Mrs Li Dak Sum and Mr Li himself, officiated a presentation ceremony on 28 February 2018, with Professor Rocky S. Professor Shyy thanked the donors for their steadfast support of Hong Kong's education. He also commended the scholarship recipients for their hard work and good conduct and urged them to make the most out of the opportunities ahead. "Please take full advantage of your four years at the university, to hone your skills and knowledge, build new friendship, and broaden horizons by actively participating in out-of-classroom activities," he remarked. For the awardees, "the best way to reciprocate Dr Li Dak Sum and his family's generosity" is to "make a positive impact on society," Professor Shyy also said.
Since its inception last year, the scholarship was established with a generous donation of HK$300 million from philanthropist Dr Li Dak Sum in 2015. Each university received HK$100 million donation to set up an endowment fund for the scholarship. This year, 14 scholarship recipients, from the Ning Po College and Ning Po No. 2 College, will pursue higher education in three universities in Hong Kong, majoring in arts, science, nursing, business, social sciences, and engineering.
