A Conversation with HKUST Founding President Prof. Chia-Wei WOO

The School of Engineering had the pleasure of welcoming the University’s Founding President Prof. Chia-Wei WOO back to campus for an engaging conversation with faculty members, staff and students on April 22, 2024. Sharp and quick-witted as ever, Prof. Woo recounted his decision to return to Hong Kong from the United States, the early days of founding HKUST, his dealings with government officials to extend the campus layout, persuading the first group of world-class senior faculty joining him to establish this university, setting a high standard for faculty recruitment, and laying a solid foundation for this great university to thrive. There was no doubt that the audience found his behind-the-scenes stories fascinating.

In appreciation of Prof. Woo’s valuable sharing, Dean of Engineering Prof. Hong K. LO presented a tailor-made wooden plaque as a souvenir to him. The plaque was made from the preserved wood of the 35-year-old Acacia Confusa trees on campus that were cut down to make way for the construction of the new Innovation Building.

Prof. Woo’s remarks on the future of HKUST and the higher education sector were insightful, inspiring School members to carry the baton and continue his excellent work, ensuring that HKUST will soar to new heights for generations to come. Hats off to Prof. Woo!

The audience was captivated by Prof. Woo’s recount of many behind-the-scenes stories.

Prof. Woo, pointing to the hill near the campus’ north entrance, shared that the hill was artificially made back then to block outsiders’ view of the planned British military camp, which later became the site of the HKUST campus.
