Say Goodbye to our Beautiful SmART Steps

SmART Steps was one of the very first projects supported by the Sustainable Smart Campus as a Living Lab initiative. You may have seen the results of the artwork in the stairwells next to Lift 3, Lifts 13-15, and Lifts 25-26.  The concept was that beautifying the dull stairwells with colourful murals would create an incentive to use the steps and engage in a healthier lifestyle.

As part of the project, the SSC team also identified the outdoor steps outside of the CYT as a great opportunity to do the same while getting students and members of our campus community involved.  There was one catch: we knew that a new Innovation Building would be coming soon, and the steps would have a limited lifespan.

Undeterred, the teams decided that even just a few short years with a great art project would be better than nothing, so they issued a design competition and selected a submission from Ting Sun, a PG student with a delightful scene of water cascading down the steps among a bounty of fish and plants.  With the help of dozens of students and campus residents, the steps came alive.

With just a few weeks remaining before the new Innovation Building construction begins, now is the time to go take one last look at these wonderful steps, take some selfies, and reflect on the power of our community to make this campus special and unique.
